Explorer Scouts are the fourth section of the Scouting family, coming after beavers, cubs and scouts. They are young people aged from 14 up to 18. A large part of the programme focuses on outdoor adventure and we offer a range of camps, hikes and other similar activities along with the related training. We also participate in DofE, including the full range of Bronze, Silver and Gold expeditions - which can range from Thetford Forest to wild camping in the Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia and the Lake District. DofE sits alongside Chief Scout and Queen Scout challenge awards that are also worked upon, as well as a range of activity and other challenge badges. Community and Values also play important roles in the programme to help with the rounded personal development of these young people in their mid-teen years.
Many Explorers also participate in our Young Leader scheme helping at local beaver, cub and scout groups. Through progressive training and hands-on experience, they gain valuable leadership skills as well as building self-confidence.
The Explorer section in the District operates under the common name of Legacy Explorer Scouts and is made up of three units – Legacy Monday meeting in Great Horkesley, Legacy Tuesday meeting in West Bergholt and Legacy Wednesday meeting in St Johns. They each run their own programme but come together for District and County events.
